Why can't you? You set the motherboard's connector card for dual cards. All that does is set slots up as 2 x8 PCI-Express slots. You can use two video cards in their for multi-monitor support. You don't have to use them for SLi. Your video card will still work with only x8 PCI-Express lanes.

Extreme 980 ti. Within the next 18 months I'd like to get another 980 ti and SLI the cards but the card is a triple slot monster. The mobo has 4 PCI-E slots (3 @ 16x and the bottom one is 8x).
